Rangers, Vanbiesbrouck Blank Nordiques

John Vanbiesbrouck stopped 22 shots for the ninth shutout of his career as the New York Rangers set a team record by winning their seventh home game without a defeat this season, beating the Quebec Nordiques, 5-0, on Monday night.

The Rangers won their fifth game in a row and 10th in 11 games since opening the season 0-2.

The Rangers’ 7-0-0 start at Madison Square Garden is the best in their 65 NHL seasons. The seven-game home winning streak is their longest since 1983-84. Their previous best home start, 6-0-0, also came in 1983-84.

The Rangers, with an NHL-best record of 10-3-0, handed the Nordiques their fourth loss in a row and beat Quebec for the seventh consecutive time in New York.

Vanbiesbrouck recorded his second shutout of the season.

Ray Sheppard and Mark Janssens scored for the Rangers in the first period. Brian Leetch made it 3-0 in the second period and Kevin Miller and Brian Mullen scored in the third period.
