Cincinnati Reds outfielder Eric Davis was released today from a hospital to go home and continue recovering from the kidney injury he suffered Oct. 20 when the Reds completed their World Series sweep of the Oakland A’s.

Davis, 28, emerged from Christ Hospital and told reporters that he is looking forward to relaxing at home and playing with his daughters, Erica and Sacha Kiare. Davis suffered a bruised and lacerated kidney when he dived for a ball during Game 4, won by the Reds, 2-1.

Because of his hospitalization, Davis missed the Reds’ trip to the White House for today’s meeting with President Bush. Davis took it in stride, saying his wife, Sherrie, would take photographs of the Rose Garden meeting for him.

Davis again expressed thanks to Reds fans who sent him get-well cards or left telephone messages at the Oakland, Calif., hospital where he was taken after the Oct. 20 injury.

“The phone calls, the messages that different people from around the Cincinnati area gave to me, that means more than any gift to me, knowing that they were behind me and they really cared about me. That’s all I needed,” he said.

Davis has told reporters that he was upset that the Reds did not pay the $15,000 bill to bring him back to Cincinnati from Oakland, where he was hospitalized during the final game of the World Series.
