FILLMORE : Economic Fears Halt City Hall Expansion

Share

A proposed $1.1-million expansion of Fillmore City Hall has been put on hold because of concerns about the nation’s economy.

On the advice of City Manager Roy Payne, council members voted Tuesday to delay adding nearly 5,000 square feet of office space at City Hall, even though local government has outgrown the building.

The public works and fire departments are housed in a trailer behind the building, and lack of space has forced city planners to use offices across the street on Sespe Avenue, officials said.

An initial expansion would have housed departments now working outside City Hall. The projected cost was $350,000.

Payne said that during an assessment of staff needs, plans more than doubled in size and tripled in expense--expanding to include office space for the recreation coordinator, council members, and a city engineer, if Fillmore decided to fill the position full time.

The addition would have included restrooms for the handicapped, which the current City Hall lacks.
