Man Slain, Pregnant Woman Shot; Fetus OK
A pregnant woman from Paramount was wounded Wednesday during a robbery attempt in Long Beach, the third pregnant woman in a week who has fallen victim to a street shooting in Los Angeles County.
Maria Lopez, 29, was struck once in the abdomen, and her companion, Mark Robert Arias, 31, of Long Beach was shot and killed as they sat in a parked car at 12:45 a.m., police said.
Lopez was in guarded condition after surgery at a Paramount hospital, officials said. Her 5-month-old fetus was not struck by the bullet and was in good condition.
Another pregnant woman was critically wounded as she stood on a porch in South Los Angeles, and a 38-year-old pregnant woman was shot to death last week as she walked with her boyfriend in West Los Angeles.
