A 74-year-old man trying to cross Interstate 5 near Palomar Airport Road was struck and killed Thursday, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Joseph Frank Saputo of Bullhead City, Ariz., was struck by a vehicle in the lane nearest the median, CHP spokesman Phil Konstantin said. Saputo had left his disabled vehicle on the southbound shoulder of the road and tried to cross the freeway.
Saputo apparently walked past the emergency call box near his vehicle and might have been going to one of the nearby gas stations east of the freeway, CHP spokesman Jerry Bohrer said.
The driver of the vehicle, which was traveling about 55 m.p.h., was not cited.
