MOORPARK : College Gets Grant to Train Workers
The laser/electro-optics program at Moorpark College has received a $76,000 grant from the California Community College Board of Governors to train workers in the techniques of using lasers to measure optical surfaces and subsurfaces.
Workers will test optical components such as lenses, mirrors, telescopes and any kind of prism surface like a camera lens. Instructor Clint Harper said the employer-based training program is intended to establish cooperation between companies and the college.
The funds will enable the college to purchase a Zygo Mark IV interferometer, which can test for surface imperfections to a fraction of a wavelength of light.
Seven companies in Ventura, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara counties have signed up for training. Each training program, geared to the needs of each company, will last about six weeks, with 40 to 50 technicians being trained. Training is done at the companies’ sites.
