Guillaume Raoux, a French qualifier ranked 134th in the world, beat U.S. Open champion Pete Sampras, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, Thursday in the Paris indoor tournament, and Jonas Svensson of Sweden upset Ivan Lendl, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Svensson, ranked 16th in the world, had beaten Lendl in the 1988 French Open to end his two-year reign as champion.

“Like the last time I played him at Roland Garros, I just tried to do the best,” Svensson said. “I think I played very good and smart, but I don’t think he likes my game.”

Raoux, 20, who had to survive three rounds of a preliminary tournament to make the main draw, came from a break down in the third set to beat the 19-year-old Sampras.

Raoux served nine aces but also had eight double faults.

“This is a real downer,” Sampras said. “He was going for broke on every shot. He was playing in front of his home crowd and he had nothing to lose.

“He was going for it on every serve. Sometimes he double-faulted by 20 feet.”

Top-seeded Stefan Edberg beat Aaron Krickstein, 6-3, 6-2, and second-seeded Boris Becker beat Jim Courier, 6-1, 7-5, to gain the quarterfinals.

In another upset, qualifier Michael Stich of Germany beat eighth-seeded Brad Gilbert, 6-4, 6-4. Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland, who beat John McEnroe on Wednesday night, beat ninth-seeded Goran Ivanisevic of Yugoslavia, 6-3, 6-4.

Sergi Bruguera of Spain beat Marc Rosset of Switzerland, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, and sixth-seeded Emilio Sanchez of Spain defeated Guy Forget of France, 7-5, 6-3.

Third-seeded Zina Garrison defeated Mary Lou Daniels, 6-2, 7-5, to advance to the quarterfinals of the Virginia Slims of California at Oakland.

Two Californians used upsets to also advance to the quarterfinals. Marianne Werdel of Palo Alto beat fifth-seeded Amy Frazier, 7-6, (7-4), 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, and Stephanie Rehe of Oceanside defeated seventh-seeded Laura Gildemeister, 6-4, 6-4.

Top-seeded Martina Navratilova, a four-time winner of the tournament, defeated Radka Zrubakova 6-2, 6-0.

Garrison, the defending champion here, was broken at love in the first game and fell behind 2-0.

“But I was calm and able to get on a roll,” said Garrison, who won seven games in a row, including one stretch where she won 18 of 21 points. But Daniels, who ranks 62nd, turned it around and secured a break at love in the ninth game of the second set to lead 5-4.

Daniels then faltered on her serve, double-faulting and missing an opportunity on a forehand to give Garrison back the break.

Third-seeded Rafaella Reggi stopped the string of defeats for seeded players and reached the quarterfinals of the Virginia Slims of Nashville by beating Sandra Wasserman, 6-4, 6-4.
