THOUSAND OAKS : Conejo Trail System Celebration Planned
The Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency will host a celebration of its trail system today by distributing a free map that outlines more than 40 miles of hiking paths.
The map outlines stopping points and plants and animals of interest along the trail.
COSCA will provide maps and guided tours beginning at 9 a.m. at the Arts Council Center, 482 Greenmeadow Ave. in Thousand Oaks, where the Los Robles Trail System begins.
There will also be exhibits, games and a bus tour of the city’s open space. The Elks Lodge will serve a $5 barbecue lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
New signs have been installed along the trails to help hikers and riders find their way around, said Paul DeNubilo, a member of COSCA’s trail advisory committee.
The Los Robles trail starts at the Arts Council Center building in Thousand Oaks and continues 12 miles across the Santa Monica Mountains to the beach, where it ends at Sycamore Canyon State Park, said Dennis Gass, a recreation supervisor of the Conejo Recreation and Park District. It also leads east, where it ends at Lake Sherwood in Westlake Village.
The trail system is used primarily by horseback riders, hikers and mountain bicyclists, Gass said.
