UCI Student Receives Shanbrom Fellowship

UC Irvine civil engineering doctoral student John Leonard II was named the recipient of the one-year $10,000 David Lee Shanbrom Memorial Fellowship to conduct research on the safe operation of heavy trucks.

Leonard is working to complete his dissertation on “Analysis of Large Truck Accidents on Freeway-to-Freeway Connectors.” He is also an instructor at Irvine Valley College.

The fellowship was established by Helen and Edward Shanbrom after their son was killed in a freeway accident in 1986 by a speeding, out-of-control truck.

The goal of the dissertation research is to determine whether the safety of certain problem freeway connectors can be improved by minor design modifications.

Prof. James C. Miller of Chapman College in Orange was named winner of a $1,000 Sears, Roebuck & Co. Foundation Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award. He received the award for his enthusiastic history classroom presentations.

Earlier, he received the Alumni Faculty Award and the Professor of the Year Award.

Fullerton’s Acacia Elementary School sixth-grader Marisa Perring, 11, has qualified to compete in the Southwest Pacific Regional Figure Skating Championships in Conejo Valley on Nov. 16 and 17.

The event is sanctioned by the United States Figure Skating Assn. and is a qualifying competition for the sectional championships. Marisa will compete in the juvenile girls free skating and figure skating division.

She is the daughter of Evelyn Perring and the late Charles R. Perring.

The Dana Hills High School Tall Flag and Drill Team won the sweepstakes trophy at the recent Cal Poly Pomona Field Tournament. Karen Stuart, who leads the school’s Pageantry Corps, has been selected as a member of the United States Spirit Assn.’s tall flag team that will provide halftime entertainment at the Aloha Bowl in Honolulu on Christmas Day.

Amy Burke, a sophomore from Costa Mesa, was selected Orange Coast College’s Homecoming Queen and Darian Dahlof Fountain Valley was named Homecoming King.

Anaheim resident Jeffrey Hadsallis the first Cal State Fullerton student to be presented a $2,500 California State University Trustees Award for Outstanding Achievement since the award was initiated in 1987.

A senior with a 4.0 grade-point average, Hadsall has been on the dean’s list for six consecutive semesters and has won a series of other honors, including the 1989 General Chemistry Award.

Aside from his studies, Hadsall creates steel and aluminum sculpture of African and American wildlife.

John R. Parker, an ornamental horticulture professor at Orange Coast College, was honored with an Education Award by the Orange County Chapter of the California Assn. of Nurserymen for his service and dedication to the nursery industry. He is a Capistrano Beach resident.

Orange County resident Alan L. Chancellor, a 27-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, was promoted from captain to commander and assumed command of an area custody division that includes the Sybil Brand Institute.
