Louis Vuitton Cup Sailing Schedule Set

Twelve boats, representing 10 countries, will compete for the Louis Vuitton Cup, off the coast of San Diego in 1992, and the right to challenge the top U.S. defender for the America’s Cup in a single duel, it was announced Sunday.

There are three round-robin rounds: Jan. 10-23, each victory worth one point each; Feb. 2-16, worth four points each; and March 1-15, worth eight points each.

The four leading boats will race in the semifinals from March 28-April 12. The two-best boats then sail against each other April 21-30 for the Louis Vuitton Cup.

The winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup will then be matched against the San Diego Yacht Club’s defender for the America’s Cup.

MEN’S SOCCER

Hilltop High graduate Charles Adair scored twice, off assists from Phillip Button and Leo Ronces, to lead the University of San Diego (12-5-1, 2-2-1) to a 2-0 West Coast Conference victory over visiting Portland (12-5-1, 4-1). The Toreros handed Portland its first WCC loss in three years. Goalkeeper Kasey Keller, backup for the U.S. World Cup team, allowed USD its first points in three seasons against Portland. USD freshman goalie Tom Tate, from University of San Diego High School, recorded his ninth shutout.

New Mexico scored a 2-1 victory over U.S. International at the 16th USIU Classic. USIU (5-14-1) got its only goal from Joachim Seip. Air Force (11-6-1) scored a 2-0 victory over CSU Los Angeles (7-12-0) in the championship game. New Mexico is 10-9-3.

CREW

USD men finished fifth over 5,000 meters at the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival at Newport Harbor. USD clocked 15:59 in the men’s open eight-man race. SDSU’s A boat took sixth in 16:04 and the B boat was 14th in 17:05. UC Santa Barbara won in 15:20.

The next-best USD finish was in the women’s novice eight with an eighth-place time of 23:07. California won that race in 19:08. USD was 10th in the women’s open eight in 19:30; Santa Barbara won in 17:48.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Thom Hunt ran the 8,000-meter Aztec course at Morley field in 25 minutes nine seconds to win the San Diego-Imperial Athletics Congress championships. Hunt beat Steve McCormack (25:26) and Bill Cleves (25:39).

Joni Shirley won the women’s race in 19:56 on the 5,000 meter Kinney course. Meta Leckband took second in 20:04.

SURFING

Trevor Christ of Encinitas finished third in the $75,000 Budweiser U.S. Surfing Championships off Ocean Beach in San Francisco. Christ earned $2,500 in the pro-am. Winner Vince De La Pena of Laguna Niguel won $7,100.
