SANTA ANITA NOTES : Unbridled May Return for Shot at Handicap
Trainer Carl Nafzger, at Santa Anita with Coolawin for Sunday’s Yellow Ribbon Stakes, said he will take Breeders’ Cup Classic and Kentucky Derby winner Unbridled and Super Derby winner Home At Last to Gulfstream Park in Florida for the winter but will consider sending Unbridled here for the Santa Anita Handicap and Home At Last here for the Charles H. Strub Stakes.
Trainer Bill Shoemaker is getting Fire The Groom, winner of the Aqueduct Budweiser Breeders’ Cup Saturday, this week.
Formerly trained by Luca Cumani, the European import is owned by R. D. Hubbard and Edward Allred.
Shoemaker also plans to send Burt Bacharach’s Sweet Roberta back to Bay Meadows on Saturday for the Hillsborough Handicap
Dr. Jack Robbins, West Coast manager for Jack Kent Cooke, said Flying Continental is getting a four-week break at M 72 Farm in Bradbury after bleeding in the Breeders’ Cup and would be pointed for the Santa Anita Handicap.
Tony Matos said Oraibi has been returned to stud duty at his farm in Llano after returning from the Morvic h Handicap last week with filling in an ankle. The fee is $3,500.
Oak Leaf Stakes winner Lite Light, who also bled in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, worked a half in :48 in preparation for the Hollywood Starlet.
Del Mar Oaks winner Slew of Pearls drilled five furlongs in 1:01 2/5.
Louis Cyphre, a European import in the Bobby Frankel barn, drilled five furlongs in :58 1/5.
