World IN BRIEF : IRAN : 6.6 Quake Rocks Southern Region
A major earthquake hit southern Iran, but there were no immediate reports of casualties, sources in Tehran said. The quake was registered at magnitude 6.6, an official at the Tehran University Geophysical Institute said. It struck just before 10 p.m., shaking the town of Jahrom, about 500 miles southeast of Tehran, he said. It was the second major temblor to hit Iran in recent months. In June, an earthquake of magnitude 7.3 to 7.7 destroyed several towns and villages northeast of Tehran. Up to 50,000 people were reported killed.
