World IN BRIEF : IRAN : 7.0 Quake Rocks Southern Region

A major earthquake hit a mountainous area in southern Iran. The quake was registered at a magnitude 7.0, according to the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colo. An official at the Tehran University Geophysical Institute, however, said it was a magnitude 6.6. The quake struck just before 10 p.m., shaking the town of Jahrom, about 500 miles southeast of Tehran, he said. An early report from the region indicated there were about 100 casualties. It was the second major temblor to hit Iran in less than five months.
