PRO FOOTBALL REPORT : WEEKDAY UPDATE : RAMS : Giants Merely Tip of the Iceberg

The Rams (3-5) not only have the unbeaten New York Giants coming up Sunday at Anaheim Stadium, they have two games against the unbeaten San Francisco 49ers and road games against Atlanta, New Orleans and Cleveland in the second half of the season.

The Rams were 5-3 at the midway point last season, but some of their resounding defeats this season have forced quarterback Jim Everett to pass more frequently. After eight games in 1989, Everett had thrown for 2,019 yards and 14 touchdowns with nine interceptions. This year, he has 2,121 yards and 15 touchdowns with only seven interceptions.

The New York Jets figured that cornerback Bobby Humphery was past his prime when they traded him to the Rams this year. Jet General Manager Dick Steinberg said Humphery had “peaked” after the draft-day deal netted New York a fifth-round draft choice.

Humphery, who started all 16 games for the Jets in each of the past two seasons, had only one interception in seven years with New York while playing mainly man-to-man coverage. After eight games in the Rams’ zone defense, Humphery has three interceptions.
