Eighteen employees at a Pacific Bell building were taken to local hospitals Wednesday after inhaling fumes from an unidentified cleaning chemical, authorities said.

A hazardous-materials team was called to the building at 1452 Edinger Ave. about 8:50 p.m., after receiving reports that people were having trouble breathing, fire officials said.

The workers’ injuries were considered “very mild,” a fire dispatcher said. They were taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, Irvine Medical Center and Healthcare Medical Center of Tustin, where they were treated and released.
