MUSIC : Musical Tastes Converge In a Benefit Jam

Classical, big band, jazz, Dixieland . . . whatever your musical pleasure, you’re sure to find something you like Sunday at the Red Lion Hotel in Costa Mesa. About 300 musicians will gather for “Bash 90,” the 20th annual festival sponsored by the Orange County Musicians’ Assn., Local No. 7, American Federation of Musicians.

Tickets are a bargain at $14 each, and you’ll be benefiting some good causes: All the proceeds go to the Musicians’ Emergency Relief and Scholarship funds.

It all begins at noon and ends around 10 p.m. with a giant jam session. About 10 groups will be performing every hour.

At noon alone, your choices will include the Bernie Farr Big Band, the Wally Bunker Five jazz group, the George Carr Superstars Dixieland band and classical musicians Susan Fries and Richard Glenn.

All the musicians are donating their time and the Red Lion Hotel is providing the facility without charge, according to Bob Stava, secretary-treasurer of the Local.

Founded in the ‘20s, Local 7 has about 1,300 members. Last year’s bash drew about 1,500 people and cleared about $7,000.
