David Peoples overcame four bogeys in Thursday’s second round of the Kapalua International for a two-under-par 69, giving him a three-shot lead.

Peoples’ two-day total of 10-under 132 was three strokes better than Tom Purtzer, who had a second-round 68, and four ahead of Nick Price, whose 67 equaled the best round of the day.

Ben Crenshaw, who started the day one shot behind Peoples, drove out of bounds on the final hole for a double-bogey six and a two-over 73. He is five shots out of the lead in a group at 137.

The trade winds kicked up at the Kapalua Bay Course on Maui after a relatively calm first round and the scores showed it. Seven golfers shot 66 or better Wednesday, but no one could do better than 67 Thursday.

Peoples, 30, joined the tour in 1983 and has been through the qualifying school nine times in his efforts to stay there. He finally came through this year with $259,367 in earnings, 57th on the money list. His best finish was a tie for third. A victory here would earn him $150,000.

“I hit the ball really good, but I’m not satisfied with the score I got,” he said. “I feel I left at least three shots out there today. I kept picking the wrong club.”

Spain’s Jose Maria Olazabal rolled in six birdies en route to a six-under-par 66 and took a one-stroke lead after the first round of the $1-million Visa Taiheiyo Club Masters at Gotemba, Japan.

Olazabal, the defending champion, was one of 40 players in the 84-man field to break par on the 7,072-yard, par-72 Taiheiyo Club course.

Another Spaniard, Miguel Angel Martin, was tied for second at 67 with three Japanese--Masashi (Jumbo) Ozaki, Naomichi (Joe) Ozaki and Nobuo Serizawa.
