Chicago Blackhawk goaltender Ed Belfour took advantage of the slumping Edmonton Oilers to become the NHL’s first 10-game winner Thursday night in a 5-3 victory at Chicago.

Two of Edmonton’s goals came on power plays.

The defending Stanley Cup champions have lost a franchise-record eight consecutive games. The Oilers are 1-10-0 in their past 11 games, 0-5-1 on the road and 2-10-2 overall.

Mike Hudson’s fluke goal at 9:38 of the third period proved to be the game-winner, giving Chicago a 4-2 lead.

Hudson and Edmonton’s Jeff Beukeboom battled for a loose puck near the Oilers’ net and Hudson, taking a swipe at the puck, banged it in off goalie Bill Ranford’s shoulder.

Calgary 8, Philadelphia 2--Sergei Makarov and Joe Nieuwendyk each had a goal and three assists to lead the Flames past the Flyers at Philadelphia.

The Flames broke the game open with five goals in the third period.

St. Louis 3, Pittsburgh 2--The Blues got power-play goals from Michel Mongeau and Gino Davallini in the first five minutes of the third period at Pittsburgh for their ninth win in the past 11 games.

It was the first time this year the Penguins had allowed more than one power-play goal at home.

Vancouver 5, Toronto 3--Power-play goals by Trevor Linden and Brian Bradley ignited a four-goal blitz by the Canucks in the second period at Toronto as they sent the Maple Leafs down to their fifth consecutive defeat.

Adrien Plavsic, Steve Bozek and Gary Valk also scored for the Canucks.

Minnesota 3, Quebec 2--Gaeten Duchesne, primarily a penalty-killer, scored his first goal of the season at Bloomington, Minn., as the North Stars handed the Nordiques their eighth loss in a row.
