THE SIDELINES : Aussie Eagles in Japan Tourney
Wayne Grady of Australia eagled the final hole today for a 6-under-par 66 and a share of the second-round lead with Jose Maria Olazabal in the $1-million Visa Taiheiyo Club Masters.
Grady’s 15-foot putt on the par-5 18th gave him a two-round total of 10-under 134 on the 7,072-yard, par-72 Taiheiyo Club Gotemba course.
“I changed the grip on my putter overnight,” Grady said. “That was the big difference because I felt very solid. It’s the first time I’ve led a tournament in Japan and it’s just a nice position to be in.”
Olazabal, the first-round leader, had a round of 68.
Masters and British Open champion Nick Faldo missed the cut after taking a triple-bogey 8 on the last hole. Faldo had a 78 for a two-round total of 2-over 146.
