San Diego State upset 10th-ranked New Mexico, 15-8, 11-15, 15-5, 15-11, at Peterson Gym. Jennifer Miller and Angela Martin led the Aztecs (20-9, 5-3) with 13 kills apiece. The victory keeps SDSU’s slim NCAA tournament hopes alive. New Mexico fell to 16-5 and 6-2.
UC San Diego advanced to the NCAA Division III Western Regional finals with a 15-12, 15-7, 15-13 over Colorado College at Pomona Pitzer College. Vikki Van Duyne led UCSD (34-8) with 16 kills and Liz Vesanovic added 15. UCSD will play in the finals tonight at 7 p.m. against Pomona Pitzer. The winner moves on to the final four next weekend.
WATER POLO
UCSD defeated Hawaii Chaminade, 13-8, at the Western Water Polo Assn championships in Pomona. Gary Seelhorst and Kevin Vance had two goals apiece for the Tritons (8-21), who will face No. 2-seeded Cal State Los Angeles today at 1:30 in the semifinals.
MEN’S TENNIS
University of San Diego’s Fredrik Axsater and Thomas Simonsen both lost in second-round singles action at the Rolex/Intercollegiate Southern California Regionals at UC Irvine. Axsater was defeated by Scott Sigerseth of Arizona, 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-1 and Simonsen lost in straight sets to Bill Barber of UCLA, 6-2, 6-2.
San Diego State doubles team Jeff Belloli and Dax Peterson advanced to the finals of the Region 7 Rolex/Intercollegiate Tennis Championships at the University of Utah by beating Ed Peregrino and Lindsay Rawstrone of Utah, 6-2, 7-5.
SDSU’s Ricardo Herrera, seeded second in the tournament, was upset in the semifinals by No. 4 seed Mike Tebbutt of Northern Arizona University, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Herrera and Aztec teammate Chris Numbers also lost in doubles semifinals to Paul Grubi and Tony Matkulak of University of Nevada-Reno, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
University of San Diego’s Tracy Schweiger won the 100- and 200-meter backstroke, but the Toreros fell to Arizona State, 162-85, in a nonconference dual meet in Arizona.
