El Toro High School’s Rob Johnson threw for 274 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for another as the Chargers geared up for the playoffs by defeating San Clemente, 40-12, in a South Coast League game at San Clemente.

The Chargers (9-1, 4-1 in league) clinched second place in the South Coast League. San Clemente (4-6, 0-5) fell behind, 21-6, at the half.

“It was a real good game for us and I think we’re ready for the playoffs,” said El Toro Coach Bob Johnson.

There’s no question about that in the minds of the San Clemente players. The Chargers piled up 428 yards in total offense, held the Tritons to just 38 yards rushing and intercepted the San Clemente quarterback four times.

El Toro started the scoring on its first possession when Johnson, who completed his first eight passes, threw two yards to David Canfield to cap a seven-play, 57-yard drive.

Jason Rojas dove over from two yards out to put the Chargers up 13-0, finishing a four-play, 40-yard drive.

San Clemente rallied when Dolan threw seven yards to Rick Winters to make it 13-7.

Then Johnson ran one yard for a touchdown and threw to Darren Doalson for the two-point conversion, and El Toro had a 21-6 lead.

The Chargers pushed it to 28-6 when Johnson threw 18 yards to Doalson with 3:26 left.

El Toro scored again when Johnson threw 11 yards to Ken Koppleman to push it to 34-12. Jeff Brizic closed the scoring with a 30-yard touchdown making the final score, 40-12.
