PREP PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : Edison Defeats Crespi on Last-Second Goal

Brian Melstrom scored the winning goal on a shot to the upper right corner of the goal from half-tank with one second left to lead Edison to a 7-6 victory over Crespi in a Southern Section 3-A Division water polo playoff game Friday at Golden West College.

Crespi had tied the score with just six seconds to play.

Todd McClung had two goals, and Matt Schacht had 14 saves for Edison (19-8). Edison scored four goals in the fourth quarter, three by Melstrom and one by McClung.

Crespi led, 4-3, going into the final quarter.

In another 3-A Division water polo game:

Marina 9, Hacienda Heights Wilson 7--Matt Braun had three goals to lead Marina to an upset of second-seeded Wilson at Golden West College. Steve Ray and John Kenyon each had two goals and Eric Goodwin had 11 saves for Marina.

In 4-A Division water polo:

Capistrano Valley 8, Villa Park 3--Capistrano Valley jumped out to a 5-0 lead at half and effectively shut down third-seeded Villa Park at El Toro. Capistrano Valley goalie Nick Kittredge had a school-record 21 saves and five steals.

The Cougars led, 5-1, after three quarters. Offensively, Capistrano Valley was led by Kevin Eggert’s four goals, Dan Hancock’s three goals and Jeremy Braxton-Brown had one.

Corona del Mar 10, Sunny Hills 2--Ryan Weir had four goals and Brent O’Brien had three to lead Corona del Mar (24-4) in a first-round match at Independence Park.

Robby Pike had 10 saves as the Sea Kings shut down Sunny Hills from the start, leading, 6-1, at halftime. Sunny Hills finished 15-12.

In the second round of the Southern Section girls’ 4-A volleyball playoffs:

Marina 3, Cypress 0--Cristin Rossman had 10 kills as Marina (14-4) swept Cypress, 15-10, 15-5, 15-3. Cypress, the Empire League champions, ended 14-4.
