Americans Ousted From Badminton Event
Two Indonesians defeated the two remaining American men in the U.S. Open Badminton Championships singles competition Saturday at UC Irvine’s Bren Center.
Bambang Suprianto defeated Chris Jogis of Manhattan Beach, 15-10, 15-4, and top-seeded Fung Permadi beat Tariq Wadood of Redondo Beach, 15-1, 15-1, in the men’s singles semifinals to advance to today’s finals.
In the mixed doubles semifinals, Traci Britton of Canada and Wadood teamed to beat Yao Ximing and Terry Lira of the United States, 15-8, 15-8, and Britton’s Canadian husband, John, teamed with Yelena Rybkina of the Soviet Union to defeat Heinz Fischer of Austria and Diana Koleva of Bulgaria, 15-7, 17-14.
