El Camino Earns Bowl Bid, 26-11

El Camino clinched the Mission Conference Northern Division title Saturday night with a 26-11 victory over Long Beach City College at Murdock Stadium.

The victory also earned a bowl bid for the Warriors (7-2 overall, 6-2 in league play) on Dec. 1 and at least a tie for first in the 16-member league.

Long Beach, with one game remain on its schedule, fell to 4-5 and 4-3.

The Warriors were impressive in the first half. They scored three times in the first quarter, which lasted 55 minutes and had a total of 135 yards of penalties. The Warriors scored on drives of 75, 56 and 64 yards.

Quarterback Rod Harvey was impressive in the first half, completing 14 of 19 passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns. He finished with 17 of 27 for 193 yards and three touchdowns.

Running back Tony DaCosta ran nine yards for the Warriors’ first score with 10:21 left in the first quarter. Harvey threw a 12-yard pass to Calbert Johnson for the second touchdown.

Harvey threw a 46-yard pass to Steve Danzy for the his second touchdown, which came on a third-and-five situation. The score gave El Camino a 20-0 halftime lead.

Meanwhile, the Vikings were struggling and getting called for numerous penalties. There were several scuffles early in the game.

Long Beach gained only 54 yards in the first half and quarterback Stevie Jones, who was benched at the start of the second half, completed only one of six passes for 20 yards.

Things only got worse for the Vikings in the second half. Keith Huff fumbled on the second play of the third quarter and El Camino defensive back Anthony Cole recovered at the Long Beach six-yard line. One play later, Harvey passed to Daigle for a six-yard touchdown to give El Camino a 26-0 lead.
