A 27-year-old man was in critical condition after being shot in the chest while allegedly trying to break into a Mission Beach apartment early Sunday, police said.
The occupant of the apartment in the 800 block of San Jose Place was awakened about 3:31 a.m. by noise and armed himself with a shotgun when he heard someone attempting to break in the front door, police said.
When the door burst open, the occupant fired one shot at the suspect, Andrew Weisiger, hitting him in the chest. Weisiger was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla.
