NHL ROUNDUP : Janney Gets the Big Goal for Bruins

Share

Most of Craig Janney’s important contributions to the Boston Bruins are on defense.

But when they needed a goal Sunday at Landover, Md., the rugged center scored the tiebreaker early in the third period and the Bruins beat the Washington Capitals, 5-3.

It was the fourth goal for Janney and kept the Bruins a point ahead of Montreal in the Adams Division. The Capitals were still in the battle until Randy Burridge scored into an empty net with 20 seconds left.

In the second period, Bruins Bob Carpenter and Dave Christian scored 62 seconds apart.

The Bruins are unbeaten in their last four games and are 6-1-2 over their last nine.

New York Rangers 4, Calgary 4--Joel Otto’s goal late in the second period at New York was the last score of the game and gave the Flames the tie.

Philadelphia 2, Vancouver 0--Pete Peeters stopped 31 shots, 16 of them in the second period, and the Flyers snapped a home losing streak to the Canucks.

The Canucks scored a victory for four years in a row in their one visit to the Spectrum. The Flyers have won four of their last five.

Montreal 5, Quebec 4--The Nordiques had a good chance to end their losing streak at Montreal, but the Canadiens tied the score with 5:41 left in regulation and won in overtime on Sylvain Lefebvre’s first goal of the season with just 53 seconds left in the five-minute extra period.

The Nordiques (3-13-3) have lost 10 in a row.

Chicago 3, Winnipeg 3--Although Winnipeg pushed over a goal midway through the third period at Chicago, the tie put the Blackhawks in first place in the Norris Division.
