Committees Agree on Dates for America’s Cup

A basic agreement was reached Tuesday between the America’s Cup Organizing Committee and the Challenger of Record Committee whereby the America’s Cup will begin May 9, 1992.

The two groups also came to agreement on the dates of the Louis Vuitton Cup Challenger Selection Races: Round robin 1 (each victory worth one point), Jan. 10-23, 1992; Round robin 2 (four points), Feb. 2-16; Round robin 3 (eight points), March 1-15; Semifinals (top four boats sail a nine-race round robin), March 28-April 12; and the Finals (best of seven), April 21-30.

The races will be off the coast of Point Loma.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The University of San Diego, in its final home match of the season, rallied to defeat U.S. International, 5-15, 15-13, 15-11, 15-5, at USD. Nikki Wallace led the Toreras (15-14) with 25 kills. Heather Kelley had 16 kills for USIU.

WOMEN’S GOLF

U.S. International is fourth, 22 strokes behind leading Brigham Young after two rounds of the 11th annual USIU Invitational at the par-73, 6,034-yard Rancho Bernardo Inn West Course.

USIU’s Kim Millies is 11th at 162, 12 strokes behind Nebraska’s Joanne Brooks, who is leading the three-round tournament that concludes today.

BOWLING

Jess Stayrook of San Diego is the leader after two rounds in the Professional Bowlers Assn. $200,000 Brunswick Memorial World Open in Chicago. Stayrook, who rolled consecutive games of 266, 279, 247 and 278, averaged 233 in the second round to take a 17-pin lead over Mike Edwards of Tulsa, Okla.

Wendy Macpherson of San Diego is third after two rounds of the Ladies Pro Bowlers Tour $100,000 Sam’s Town Invitational in Las Vegas. Macpherson trails leader Donna Adamek of Apple Valley by 124 pins.
