ON THE SIDELINES : Soviets Beat China in Volleyball

TOKYO —
Irina Smirnova and Elena Batukhtina led the Soviet Union to victory over China 14-16, 15-3, 15-5, 15-5 in the final of the World Top Four women’s volleyball tournament today.
In the match for third place, Japan beat the United States 8-15, 15-9, 13-15, 15-5, 15-12. Mayumi Saito led Japan with 18 kills. Caren Kemner had 19 for the United States.
