Norwalk : Adult School Gets Federal Grants for Single Parents
The Adult School of the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District has been awarded approximately $40,000 in federal grants to assist single parents attending classes and to establish a career counseling center.
One grant will aid 100 single parents or unemployed people who are re-entering the work force, said Frances Baker, project coordinator at the school. The grant will provide money for class fees and child care when students need it.
Another grant will pay for computers at a career counseling and job placement center. Baker will head the center, which is scheduled to open in February.
Students at the Adult School can take classes toward a high school diploma. Other classes include English as a second language, amnesty, business skills, upholstery and cooking.
The school has 5,000 students enrolled for the fall semester.
