Share

The Simi Valley Police Officers Assn. will sponsor a free Thanksgiving dinner for the city’s homeless, officials said Wednesday.

The dinner--which will include turkey, ham and all the trimmings--will be held between 5 and 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Missionary Alliance Church, said Officer Dave Weiner, an association member. The church is located in the 1000 block of Ashland Avenue.

Public Action to Deliver Shelter, a citywide organization that provides temporary shelter for the homeless, is co-sponsoring the event, Weiner said.

Members of the group and the officers association will be on hand to prepare and serve dinner, he said. About 100 people are expected to take attend the dinner.

Weiner said it is estimated that there are 200 to 250 homeless people in Simi Valley. In addition to the homeless, people who are hungry and without food are welcome to the dinner, he said.

“We thought this would be a nice thing to do,” Weiner said. “There is a homeless problem and this gives us a shot at letting people know we do care . . . Hopefully, if all goes well, this will be an annual event.”
