LOCAL : Suspect in Rolls Theft Nabbed
A man suspected of stealing a Rolls-Royce not only refused to stop the pricey car as police chased him at high speeds early today, he wouldn’t answer the car phone ringing on the armrest, authorities said.
After a three-mile, 70-m.p.h. chase through the Rampart district--which seldom sees a beige Rolls-Royce--the man jumped from the moving car, crashing it into a Cadillac and was caught about 2 a.m., police said.
The car had been stolen at 7:10 p.m. from a gasoline station at Fairfax Avenue and 6th Street in Los Angeles by a man who told the owner that he liked her car, Lt. Bruce Crosley said.
The woman, a Beverly Hills resident whose name police withheld, was extremely nervous about telling her husband and called police frequently to check if it had been found.
Officer Sid Olshefsky dialed the car’s telephone several times but the thief wouldn’t answer, he said.
