Nationally Ranked UCSD Begins Saturday

UC San Diego, coming off its best season ever (20-7) and a first-time trip to the NCAA Division III playoffs, opens its men’s basketball season at 7 p.m. Saturday at Christ College Irvine. The Tritons play their first home game at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Point Loma Nazarene.

UCSD, which returns all five starters is ranked as high as fourth in the nation by one publication, 10th by another.

PLNC opens at home Saturday at 7 p.m. against Pacific Christian. Since it does not have a football team, the game serves as the Crusaders annual homecoming game.

Christian Heritage, which won the National Christian College Athletic Assn. championship last year, plays in the Colorado Christian Round Robin tournament this weekend. The Hawks do not have a home (Grossmont College) game until Dec. 8.

MARATHON

After months of haggling over a course, the San Diego Marathon will be run Dec. 9 at 7 a.m. through the cities of Oceanside and Carlsbad. The race starts and finishes at the Oceanside Pier after a swing down the coastline and a seven-mile eastern loop through Carlsbad. KUSI-TV will provide three hours of live coverage beginning at 7 a.m.

PADRES

The Padres announced that seven teams will make up their farm system in 1991: Las Vegas (AAA), managed by Jim Riggleman; Steve Lubratich at Wichita (AA); Bruce Bochy at Victorville (A); Bryan Little at Waterloo (A); Dave Trembley at Charleston (A); Gene Glynn at Spokane (Rookie league); and Ken Berry at Scottsdale, Ariz. (Rookie league).

GOLF

US International finished fifth in the Women’s Intercollegiate Invitational at Rancho Bernardo Inn’s west course. Led by Blue Northcott and Wendala Manning’s totals of 243, USIU finished with a total of 992. Brigham Young won the tournament with a score of 944.

CROSS-COUNTRY

San Diego State’s men’s and women’s teams placed six runners on the Western Athletic Conference’s All-Academic teams. Tim Reynolds, who had a 3.85 grade point average, was the only Aztec to make first team. Robin Ritchie of the women’s team was selected to the second team. Matt Hurwitz, Jason Jackowski, Matt Large and Cindi Sullivan were named honorable mention.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC San Diego will play College of St. Benedict (Minn.) at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., in Friday’s semifinals of the NCAA Division III championship tournament. UCSD, ranked second in the nation, is 35-8. St. Benedict is 30-3.

In the other semifinal, top-ranked Washington (30-2) will play Juniata (Pa.). The championship is Saturday night.

UCSD is making its eighth final four appearance. The Tritons, coached by Doug Dannevik, have won five national championships and been second twice. UCSD and Juniata (41-8) are the only two teams to play in the tournament every year since the NCAA began Division III championships in 1981.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

TSV Bayer, a touring team from Germany, defeated San Diego State, 79-72, in an exhibition at Peterson Gym. Kieishsha led the Aztecs with 21 points and Crystal Lee added 17.

BOWLING

Jess Stayrook of San Diego remained atop the leader board after three rounds in the Professional Bowlers Association Brunswick Memorial World Open in Chicago.

The one-time titlist held a 17-pin lead going into the third round. Stayrook, whose lone title came at last year’s Seattle Open, totaled 5,556 pins.
