LAGUNA NIGUEL : Completion of Alicia Parkway to Proceed

Share

Laguna Niguel has received a green light from the federal government to proceed with a $4.6-million project that will complete Alicia Parkway, giving South County motorists another link to Interstate 5.

“We’ve hit what I consider a significant milestone,” said Roger Hohnbaum, road project manager for the County Environmental Management Agency. “I think there’s been a public clamoring to get the road under way.”

Six-lane Alicia Parkway currently dead-ends just past Moulton Parkway, then begins again about a mile south at Aliso Creek Road. The project will link these sections. Drivers can then turn off Crown Valley Parkway and take Alicia Parkway as an alternate route to Interstate 5.

The county has been negotiating for two years with the federal government to complete Alicia Parkway. The road will cut across federal property next to the Chet Holifield federal building, also known as the Ziggurat.

The agreement was reached last week.

While the Laguna Niguel City Council and the County Board of Supervisors must still approve the project, officials predict no further obstacles and say the road could be completed by next Christmas.

The council will consider the project at its meeting Tuesday. The agreement will go before the Board of Supervisors on Nov. 27.
