‘Hammer’ Falls on 74 Possible Gang Members

The Los Angeles Police Department launched a citywide sweep aimed at gang members Friday, making more than 74 arrests and continuing the operation through the night.

More than 300 officers took part in the latest phase of the sweeps, dubbed “Operation Hammer,” Assistant Police Chief Robert Vernon said. Three of those arrested were wanted for murder, Vernon said late Friday at the Foothill Division Station, the command post for the sweep.

Other police divisions also were booking gang members. The Newton Division in South-Central Los Angeles received a high proportion of officers for the operation “due to the increase in violence” of gang activity in that area, Vernon said.
