What’s a Theater’s Main Purpose?

Share

Your editorial “What She Did For Love” (Oct. 30) accuses Garden Grove City Councilman Raymond T. Littrell of Anglophobia.

There are many playwrights in Orange County who move elsewhere to get their plays produced. The Grove Theater will not read or produce a new play. This is true of all the taxpayer-built theaters in this area.

The so-called “artistic directors” bring us only imitations of plays we have all seen many times. They even cast actors who have previously played the same role. This is good for their egos but bad for theater in Orange County.

I hope that Councilman Littrell will try to force the Grove to be receptive to new plays written by local writers. This would be best for the actors and actresses, for the directors, the writers and the public. Orange County’s idea of culture is to spend millions of dollars to build a theater to do old plays. In other parts of the country, the money is spent on new plays in old theaters.

The “phantom” lady who gave the Grove Theater $10,000 should have used it for her mortgage, and the Grove should return her money.
