A 35-year-old woman was in critical but stable condition after her legs were severed when she was struck by a train in Willowbrook Saturday morning.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies said the woman, whom they did not identify, was apparently attempting to commit suicide when she was hit by a Southern Pacific freight train at the intersection of Imperial Highway and Wilmington Avenue about 7 a.m.

“Prior to the accident, the woman was flagging down the train,” said Deputy Britta Rodela. “Even after the train engineer blasted the horn several times the woman refused to move.

“Witnesses said she jumped into the path of the train.”

The woman was rushed by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics to Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center, where she underwent surgery for more than four hours.

Paramedics also transported her severed limbs to the hospital but physicians were unable to reattach them.
