COLLEGE ROUNDUP : SCC’s Hall Places Ninth in NAIA Cross-Country

Sherri Hall of Southern California College finished ninth in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics cross-country championships Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha, Wis.

Hall, who is 39 and is her final season of cross-country eligibility, covered the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes 19 seconds 35 seconds behind winner Sarah Howell of Simon Fraser University in British Columbia. The first 25 finishers have NAIA All-American status.

In Big West Conference water polo:

UC Santa Barbara 8, UC Irvine 7--The third-ranked Gauchos led by Jason Likins (three goals) and Pete Zamoyski (two goals) defeated Irvine at Heritage Park in the final game of the regular season for both teams. Santa Barbara (22-7, 9-1 in the Big West) will play in the NCAA Championships next weekend at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach. Irvine, the defending NCAA champions, finished the season 13-16 and 3-7.

In the Arizona State four-team meet:

Cal State Fullerton 26, New Mexico 15--The Titans, ranked 36th in the nation by Amateur Wrestling News, opened their season with a split defeating New Mexico but losing to No. 4 Arizona State, 20-16. Lyndon Campbell, at 134 pounds, and heavyweight David Jones were the only Titans to win each of their matches.

In women’s swimming:

Pepperdine 169, UC Irvine 125--Lisa Williams won the 200-, 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle events and Liz Koch won the 100 and 200 backstroke to lead the Anteaters in a double-dual meet at Pepperdine. Irvine (2-1) defeated Cal State San Bernardino, 241-43.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Christ College Irvine 79, Cal Lutheran 67--Genevieve Graff had 20 points and nine rebounds for host Christ College (1-0).

Southern California College 66, Pomona Pitzer 45--Kristen Bevis had 24 points to lead the host Vanguards (1-1).

In an exhibition women’s basketball game:

Bulgarian National Team 84, Cal State Fullerton 50--Genia Miller had 20 points and eight rebounds to lead the Titans, but the Bulgarians shot 64.8% from the field and won easily.

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

Cal State Northridge 3, UC Irvine 0--Kim Collins had 16 kills for Irvine (9-20) but visiting Northridge (24-8) defeated the Anteaters, 15-12, 15-10, 15-11.
