Rock musician David Crosby was hospitalized Sunday in stable condition with multiple injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident near his Encino home, authorities said.

Crosby, 49, was riding his 1987 Harley Davidson along a winding section of White Oak Avenue in the Encino hills Saturday afternoon when he lost control and the motorcycle slid sideways on the pavement for more than 40 feet, Los Angeles Police Officer Dennis Smith said.

Cedars Sinai Medical Center spokesman Ron Wise said Crosby, a founding member of The Byrds and Crosby, Stills and Nash, broke his left leg, ankle and shoulder.

He was not wearing a helmet or other protective gear, Smith said.

The singer and guitarist told police he was riding at or below the speed limit of 25 m.p.h. when the throttle became stuck as he went around a curve.

Crosby was admitted to the hospital’s emergency room about 6:30 p.m. Saturday after first being treated at Encino Hospital. Wise said Crosby was moved to a private room Sunday after spending the night in the intensive care unit.

“He was never in what we would consider serious condition,” Wise said. “But he was pretty roughed up from the accident and the three breaks. He needed close observation for the first 24 hours.”

Wise said he did not know when the singer would be released.
