Indian Powwow to Celebrate Heritage
Members of the Riverside-based Red Nation Dancers will be among the dancers and singers appearing as part of the Indian Pow Wow today) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the quad area at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa. Also performing will be the L.A. Nation Singers.
The event is sponsored by Jahee, the American Indian club of OCC. Club members will sell jewelry, club T-shirts and Navajo tacos.
“A powwow is a re-enactment of certain spiritual and symbolic aspects of our humanity,” said club president Wydale Silversmith. “Every song, dance, gesture and detail of the beautiful attire illustrates a part of the Native American heritage as a people with groups in the distant past. . . . Through the powwow, the Native Americans pay respect to their forefathers, their elders and their families.”
The event is free and open to the public.
Of additional interest: Paul Apocada, curator of folk art at Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, will discuss American Indian art, culture and social history at 7 p.m. Wednesday at OCC’s Captain’s Table Restaurant, 2701 Fairview Road, Costa Mesa. Admission is free.
