Move to Stop Pound’s Sale of Pit Bulls Fails

The Board of Animal Regulation Commissioners Monday declined to support a department recommendation that Los Angeles stop selling pit bull terriers at its animal shelters.

The policy statement submitted by Robert Rush, general manager of the city Department of Animal Regulation, was defeated 4-1.

Only commission Vice President Eldridge Huntington supported Rush’s proposal to not sell the aggressive dogs at city shelters after the traditional seven-day waiting period. Most dogs that go unsold or unclaimed are put to death after the waiting period.

Rush has lobbied for specific city permits for pit bull owners to assure that steps are taken to protect the public from the dogs. State law prohibits discrimination by breed in permits.

Huntington also asked the commission to urge state and local lawmakers to fight for the repeal of the state statute. That motion passed.
