MEXICO CITY : From Sand To Salinas
Building momentum toward a future free-trade agreement is the main goal of next Monday’s sixth meeting between President Bush and his Mexican counterpart, Carlos Salinas de Gortari.
Salinas advisers say they don’t expect any concrete advances on an agreement since formal negotiations aren’t even scheduled until next Spring. But they do expect the two leaders to reaffirm their commitment to reaching a deal. The U.S. currently buys 75% of Mexico’s exports, and Mexico is its northern neighbor’s third largest trading partner.
Also on the agenda for two days of talks in Agualeguas and Monterrey are efforts to stem the flow of South American narcotics through Mexico to the United States.
