Los Angeles Police SWAT officers ended a five-hour search of a North Hollywood supermarket this afternoon for two armed robbers who tried to hold up the store when it opened, police said.

The gunmen apparently made their getaway in the two minutes it took police to respond to a 911 call from the Alpha-Beta store, police said.

The suspects’ descriptions and methods were similar to those of robbers who wounded two Downey policemen during the holdup of a PACE store Oct. 9, police said.

“We can’t say it’s the same crew, but it might be,” said Lt. John McCrillis. Like the Downey gang, the robbers wore ski masks and broke into the roof of the store during the early morning hours, he said.

Police found a ladder, about $2,000 in cash and a bolt cutter behind the building, leading them to believe the robbers had fled.
