While most eyes were on Indiana freshman Damon Bailey, Bob Knight’s attention was divided among several players.

The Hoosiers showed their depth Friday in a 100-78 victory over Northeastern in the opening round of the Maui Invitational. Bailey scored five points and had six assists in his collegiate debut after being a four-time Indiana all-state selection.

“Bailey played at a pace he can’t play at this level,” Knight said.

Calbert Cheaney had 26 points and Greg Graham added 20. Matt Nover and Eric Anderson, the main inside players for Indiana, had 14 and 12, respectively.

Iowa State 115, Chaminade 82--Victor Alexander scored 23 points and the Cyclones took control early in Johnny Orr’s 400th victory in his 26th year as a head coach. He is 400-290 overall.

The Cyclones (1-0) meet Syracuse in today’s semifinals.

Iowa State started the game with a 14-2 run and that was indicative of the first half as the Cyclones outrebounded the Silverswords (2-1), 31-11, and outshot them from the field, 63%-42%, for a 60-31 lead at halftime.

No. 13 Syracuse 84, Toledo 68--The Orangemen overcame cold outside shooting early in the second half, then made their free throws down the stretch to beat the Rockets.

Toledo (0-1) started the second half with a 22-10 surge to within 56-54. Mike Hopkins then hit a three-pointer for the Orangemen, their second outside basket of the half. Syracuse put the game away by making 11 of 16 free throws over the final 6:58.
