A Guide to the Best of Southern California : CARS : Metropolitan Forever
SOME PEOPLE WORSHIP at the altar of Ferrari. Others bow to Jaguar. Metropolitan Pit Stop is a shrine of a different sort, an homage to America’s first imported subcompact--the cute, cuddly Nash Metropolitan of the ‘50s. The Pit Stop houses owner Jim Valentine’s collection of Metropolitan literature and memorabilia; his catalogue lists some 1,000 parts--originals and replicas. “Artistic types seem to gravitate to its clean round lines,” Valentine says of the quirky, short-lived Metropolitan, which in prime condition can cost more than $10,000.
