The Sidelines : Virginia Women Still Rank No. 1
Virginia, which opened its season with a 91-59 victory at St. Peter’s last Saturday, solidified its hold on the No. 1 position in the Associated Press women’s basketball poll’s first weekly rankings of the season.
The Lady Cavaliers, who edged Stanford for the top spot in the preseason poll, received 47 first-place votes and 1,399 points from a panel of 56 women’s coaches.
Stanford (0-1), the defending NCAA champion, was upset by then-No. 6 Tennessee 95-80 in the season opener for both teams Sunday, to fall from second in the preseason poll to sixth with 1,103 points.
The drop by Stanford enabled Auburn (2-0) to move up a spot to second with seven first-place votes and 1,338 points.
Tennessee’s victory enabled the Vols to move from sixth to third with two first-place votes and 1,242 points.
Cal State Long Beach, (1-0), is ranked 10th and USC 24th.
