COUNTYWIDE : Work to Begin on New Car-Pool Lanes

Share

Construction of long-discussed car-pool lanes on the Orange Freeway will begin in mid-February or early March, Caltrans officials said Monday.

The project, between Lambert Road in Brea and the interchange of the Orange, Garden Grove and Santa Ana freeways, is expected to cost $25.3 million, which will come from Measure M, the half-cent county sales tax hike approved by voters on Nov. 6.

One car-pool lane will be added in each direction.

But officials warned that the Persian Gulf crisis may drive up the cost of the project, which is already being rushed to construction as a result of Measure M’s passage.

“This project has a substantial amount (14,000 tons) of asphalt, the price of which has been on the rise,” according to a staff report released last week by the Orange County Transportation Commission.

Asphalt is made from oil.
