A transient who broke into a hamburger stand early today was wearing a chef’s apron and whipping up a vanilla malt when police dropped in and hauled him off to jail.

A janitor reporting to work shortly before 5 a.m. at Tommy’s Burgers, 137 E. Anaheim St. in Wilmington, saw a man he didn’t recognize inside the restaurant, Sgt. Tony Rosa said.

The janitor went to the restaurant’s order window and saw the man, later identified as Jesse Garcia, 23, inside the building wearing a chef’s apron and hat. The janitor tried to “order” a cup of coffee and was told the coffee wasn’t ready yet, he said.

The janitor left and called police, who arrived to find the man still inside. “When they asked him what he was doing in there he said he was fixing something to eat,” Rosa said.

Garcia was booked at the Harbor Division jail on suspicion of burglary. “He had a nice jail breakfast,” Rosa said.
