Ray Sheppard came back to haunt the team that gave up on him. Sheppard, obtained for $1 from Buffalo in the off-season, scored twice and John Vanbiesbrouck stopped 27 shots as the New York Rangers extended their unbeaten streak to 10 games with a 5-0 victory over the Sabres Monday night.

The Rangers, who were 0-8-1 in the previous three seasons against the Sabres, went 2-0-1 this season as they extended their unbeaten streak to five wins and five ties.

Sheppard scored 38 goals as a rookie with Buffalo in 1987-88, but slumped to 22 the following year and spent much of last season in the minors.
