COLLEGE BASKETBALL NATIONAL ROUNDUP : Alabama Steals a Win Over Wake Forest, 96-95

Gary Waites stole the ball with 12 seconds left in overtime to preserve sixth-ranked Alabama’s 96-95 victory over Wake Forest Tuesday night at Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Waites stole the ball from Roger Siler, who sent the game into overtime at 88-88 with a three-point shot, a steal and two free throws in the final 12 seconds, capping a 40-23 surge by the Demon Deacons (2-1).

Melvin Cheatum scored 28 points for Alabama (2-0).

No. 3 Arkansas 96, Mississippi College 57--The Razorbacks routed the Choctaws at Pine Bluff, Ark., even though Todd Day and Oliver Miller sat out the first half.

Day and Miller, benched by Arkansas Coach Nolan Richardson for picking up technical fouls last week in a loss to Arizona, entered with the Razorbacks (4-1) leading, 42-41, early in the second half and took them on a 44-8 run.

Johnny Ransom scored 19 points for Mississippi College (2-2).

No. 4 North Carolina 104, Jacksonville 61--Freshman Clifford Rozier scored 22 points and the Tar Heels trounced the Dolphins at Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Tar Heels (2-0) forced the Dolphins (1-1) into 29 turnovers.

No. 14 Georgia Tech 87, Morgan State 65--Malcolm Mackey had 33 points and the Yellow Jackets (2-0)won at Atlanta.

No. 15 Connecticut 90, Hartford 63--Rod Sellers scored 21 points and the Huskies (2-0) forced the Hawks (0-2) into 20 turnovers for their seventh victory without a loss in new Gampel Pavilion at Storrs, Conn.

No. 22 Texas 76, Florida 74--Joey Wright scored 26 points, including a four-point play with 4:33 left, and the Longhorns beat the Gators at Gainesville, Fla.

Craig Brown of Florida (0-1) missed two free throws with four seconds left and Texas (1-0) leading, 75-74.

Rutgers 68, No. 23 Missouri 60--Keith Hughes scored 11 of his 20 points in the final 3 1/2 minutes and the Scarlet Knights (1-0) upset the Tigers (0-1) at Piscataway, N.J.

Hughes hit a three-point shot to give Rutgers (1-0) a 57-53 lead and added six free throws.

Memphis State 74, Tennessee 72--Kelvin Allen scored a basket after a rebound at the buzzer to lift the Tigers (1-1) to victory at Knoxville, Tenn.

Allan Houston scored a game-high 22 points for Tennessee (1-1), which had overcome a 20-point deficit in the second half.
