UCSD Moves Into Basketball Semis

The UC San Diego men’s basketball team overcame a nine-point halftime deficit to defeat Menlo College, 88-85, in the semifinals of the Lee Fulmer Tournament at University of Redlands Friday.

With two minutes remaining in the game UCSD (5-0) took a nine-point lead. On the night, UCSD shot 67.2 percent from the field.

Rick Batt and Gordon McNeill scored 20 points each, and Tim Rapp had 19 for UCSD. The three players made 25 of 37 shots (70.1 percent).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Arizona squeaked out a 74-72 win over the University of San Diego at McKale Center in Tucson. Both teams were cold in the first half, with USD making 14 of 39 attempts and Arizona making 16 of 41. Christi English led USD scorers with 20 points. At halftime USD led, 35-34.

Cari Young scored 16 points and Bernadette Diepenbrock scored 12 as UCSD defeated host UC Santa Cruz, 74-35. UCSD is 2-1, Santa Cruz 5-1.

Senior forward Shannon Abrams scored 29 points in a losing effort as Point Loma Nazarene fell to Cal State Hayward, 74-59, in the first round of the Hayward Tournament. The Crusaders will face Cal State San Bernardino, a 72-51 loser to Chapman, in the consolation game at 6 p.m. today.

TENNIS

The top four seeded players in the singles draw of the National Hardcourt Championships at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club won their women’s 40s quarterfinal matches.

Only one match went to three sets. No. 4 Martha Downing of Shingle Springs defeated No. 7 Wilma Lee of Piedmont, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.

The other winners were No. 1 Carol Baily of Steamboat Springs, Colo., No. 2 Barbara Mueller of Phoenix and No. 3 Stephanie Adcock of Los Gatos.

There was only one upset in doubles, where No. 5 Hilary Marold (Glen Ellyn, Ill.)-Betty Dent (Newport Beach) got by No. 2 Jane Willens (Los Angeles)-Dee Williams-Horn (Pasadena), 6-2, 7-5.

Michael Sass of SDSU defeated teammate Kerry Safbie, 6-1, 6-4, to advance to today’s 11 a.m. final of the 13th annual San Diego All-College Tournament at USD.

Hunter Gallaway of UCSD defeated Thomas Simonsen of USD, 6-4, 6-2, in the other semifinal.

BOWLING

San Diego’s Jess Stayrook led after eight rounds of the $150,000 PBA Touring Players Championship in Taylor, Mich., and qualified for the five-man stepladder finals. Stayrook’s match play record was 14-10 with a 56-game pinfall total of 13,784.

Duane Fisher of Gloucester Township, N.Y., qualified second at 13-10-1 and 13,658.
